I got this softcover at Barnes and Noble, on my first visit inside the store since its reopening after the COVID-19 shutdown. It's the first volume in a manga series about a capable young boy who lives in a steampunk-ish world where the population includes a variety of humanoids - typical-human Theo, his friend Hotch (who has cat ears and tail), boss Mr. Chikuwa (a 6-foot-tall humanoid cat). Theo grew up relishing the fantasy worlds in books, and hoping to find them for real someday - but as the trials of daily life took over, he began to leave the books behind. And then one day he finds a strange young girl in a junkyard (that Theo calls the "Island of Dreams" for its possibilities) - and finds that she's winged, with one wing recently torn away somehow...

He takes her in and he and his friends care for her, while he tries to think of ways to fabricate a replacement wing for her. Meanwhile, they all try to keep her presence secret, as they know that winged humans are very rare and it might be bad if greedy people found her.

This setting could be bleak and ominous, but as rendered so far it's pretty upbeat and cheery. Oh, there are threats - someone does spot Mia, and returns with other men to try and capture her. Luckily, Theo and his friends were prepared, with a variety of booby traps (non-lethal but very effective), and the threat was handled neatly - but all is not well. Mia gets a fever from activating her own secret defensive powers, and Theo has to go on a quest to the reclusive Forest Sage in hopes of finding medicine for her. Finally he finds himself in the fantasy worlds of his dreams, but of course things don't quite go as expected...

A nice start to a charming series, which reminds me a bit of Cardcaptor Sakura but without the domestic setting.

The panels showing Theo's love of books are really delightful, and the way he befriends Mia by reading to her is lovely. Very sweet series, suitable for younger readers as well as us older ones!
