Everything is changing in Rossmore. No longer a sleepy Irish town, nowadays it´s a prosperous place, so busy that a new bypass has been proposed. The people of Rossmore are divided, particularly since the road will go right through Whitethorn Woods and the well dedicated to St Ann - a well thought by some to have spiritual properties, and by others dismissed as a superstition. Well-meaning curate Father Brian Flynn has no idea which faction to support. Neddy Nolan is being offered compensation for his land - but has a personal reason to save the well. Then there´s the childless London woman who came to Whitethorn Wood, begging the saint for help, with the unexpected consequences.

Thank you very much Bjorg for the nice 3D stickers and leafy duct tape (picture doesn't make them justice) and of course for Whitethorn Woods by an author I'm very fond of.
I've actually read this book many years ago and I'm one of those people who like to revisit books every now and then. So this book will wait a bit till I'm in a mood for this kind of novel to enjoy it again and then move it on : )

I feel very lucky for winning this Sweeps for first time!
BookCrossers are generous people! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I do not know if this happens to other people or I am a weirdo, but it occasionaly happens to me...

Do you ever think that an author or a book has all those characteristics you usually find dull or you detest, still for some reason you like this book or author non the less?

This is what happens with me and Maeve Binchy. I do not usually read what is called chick-lit, I am not very fond of light-hearted, bitter-sweet books, I do not like too simple or simplistic plots... Still, I have develop a great affection for this author and even felt sad when she passed away. Maybe it has to do with me (been Greek) living for a short while in Ireland, for so short that I fell in love with the place and people but not staying long enough to start seen the less nice aspects and rationalising the whole Ireland concept. And maybe it has to do with been in my 20s then and having a great time and discovering this Irish author who mostly wrote about Ireland and Irish people exactly while been in Ireland. I don't know.

The thing is that I have read many of her novels and keep re-reading them every now and then and I am always getting irritated by some things but still I am always enjoying reading the books after all. Whitethorn Woods is an ideal read for me when I feel tired or for a break from demanding reads while I do not wish to get very involved with a book.

This book does not feature a tight plot, rather many small stories of different people loosely connected, but I can not see what's wrong with this if all one needs is a quick, easy read? I've seen some negative comments about this online but I do not get how people reading a book complain they can not remember who is who and what's going on, unless they try to read the book every few months of something. This has never happened to me while reading a book, I do not understand people who do not remember the characters and the plot and/or have to take notes while reading a novel of 300-350 pages...

Whitethorn Woods is nothing to shake one's world but it still transfers the reader to the weird parallel universe of the lattest books of Maeve Binchey, where internet and mobile phones are invented and world has move on, still people often communicate with letters and it's normal for women to worry if they'll get married before turning 21 or something. In the meantime there are still people around who would happily go and live to a geriatric home as far as there is a pub near by or men who stay home minding the house and would happily invite their elderly neighbors to live with them while babysitting their own baby when their wives work. Ah, all those crazy Binchey's contradictions...
But still there are some convincing characters and nice resolutions, like the local priest who takes a very balanced approach to the whole St Ann's Well issue and the highly unlikely but nice solution given (by Neddy of all people!) about the future of the well...

Without rambling further, I think Whitethorn Woods will please Maeve Binchy's fans as far as they are prepared and ready to accept that it is a book with different structure and narrative style than her longer, more tightly-plotted novels. 7 out of 10, rating it as a quick, heart-warming read and not rating it compared to world literature classics or something...

Thanks once again Bjorg for sharing this, I enjoyed it!

What a well-traveled book. It has gone from Iceland to Greece, and now to the USA.

I received it as part of the Chicklit and Chocolate Sweeps (along with some intriguing and mysterious chocolates from Greece - what fun!). I've got lots of extra reading time during the pandemic since I'm not working, so I hope it won't sit long on my shelf but be on to more adventures. Thanks Delphi-Reader!

What a lovely book. It was light and quick reading but also insightful in the way it showed people's own viewpoints as well as what others thought of them, and how it interwove the stories of many people living in the same town with their different viewpoints on the building of the road and the shrine.

I'm counting this in 2 reading Challenges for 2021:
