I got this slim hardcover at Barnes and Noble, unable to resist the delightful trompe l'oeil effect on the cover and flyleaves: it's made up to look like a battered ex-library book, with a chipped dustcover, a library card pocket, "DISCARD" stamps, and more! [I'm using one of the Supply Store's scannable QR-code labels, in hopes it will encourage finders to make a journal entry.]

The book's full of darkly amusing details, such as the fine print on the title page: "...to be consulted in the event of an infant or small child being torn apart by a murder of crows" - very Edward Gorey, that bit. The illustrations are handsome, if sometimes unnerving, and the captions - well, the seagull going "I heart Tippi Hedren" should be a clue, if the bit about the murder of crows hadn't already provided an idea of how dark this book can get! There's a section on owls and how deadly they can be - which is true if you're a vole, but the bit about an owl killing a woman for having clashing patterns on her outdoor furniture was perhaps a stretch {wry grin}. There's a duck muttering "Foie gras this, motherf---er!" - understandable from a duck's point of view; a grouchy mother bird preparing to regurgitate food for her young with "I puke in my kids' mouths" as the caption (scientifically accurate, if not quite what one wants to think about when viewing pretty birds in flight); and some charts at the end showing bird-attack statistics (fabricated, as far as I can tell, though some birds most definitely should not be messed with). A bit more crude and rough than I'd expected, but not without some humor.
