Patience & Sarah

My opinions went back and forth as I read this book, but I finished it in just a couple days, which I suppose means it was ultimately compelling!
I think my biggest issue was with the author's writing style, which veered around inconsistently. I think she was struggling with figuring out how to write women from a hundred and fifty years before herself. Sometimes the alternating viewpoints got a little fuzzy, and I had to re-read a paragraph to remind myself who was speaking.
Despite those flaws, I appreciated the story of this couple finding love and a way to make a life that was comfortable for them. The characters were largely engaging, and the webs of connection and relationships felt realistic for a small community, tightly bound by family bonds. I also recently read a book about the settlement of Upstate New York, so that helped flesh out the environment Patience and Sarah were heading for.

Sent to the winner of the Lesbian Sweepstakes
the book arrived safely in Helsinki today.
My wife had a first look at it and is looking forward to read it (no idea how big the waiting list is).
