I got this UK-edition softcover from an online seller. It's a sequel to The End of the World Running Club, which I enjoyed very much, but this time from the point of view of Beth, the wife of Running Club's narrator Ed.

Later: While I didn't love this one quite as much as the first book, it makes a good sequel/companion, and answers some of the questions left open at the end of the first book. This one opens with Beth, clearly after some disaster, being quizzed about the location of her children - whoa, really? They haven't been through enough?

Apparently not - though we do flash back a bit, to the ship-boarding scene where Ed and Beth last saw each other, and he was left behind. Life on the ship isn't easy - the ongoing meteor strikes have wreaked havoc on supply chains and fleets, and the demand for anything-that-floats means not all of the ships are as seaworthy as one might like. But all goes moderately well - at first - with Beth finding a congenial shipmate who loves to look after the kids, and who gives Beth some moral support when confronting some of the more demanding and curmudgeonly passengers.

And then things get worse (again) - there's a tidal wave, and an emergency evacuation, and, yes, Beth gets separated from her young children, the most traumatic thing that's happened to her yet. From there we follow her through some difficult situations, all highlighting the damage done by the meteors and the ways in which some societies have collapsed and others have risen to the occasion. There's the tough band living in the caves of the Rock of Gibralter, vying against the soulless and mercenary wealthy-tourists-turned-pirates down below; there's the barely-glimpsed but horrifying town on the Spanish coast that makes everyone want to get as far away as possible; and there's a delightful little community in a VERY unexpected place that might be the salvation of Beth and her little band of survivors - if only their mortal enemy doesn't pursue them there.

I can't say much more about that "band of survivors" without giving away some major spoilers. I will say that some of the plot twists were way too coincidentally convenient for me to find them quite believable, but on the whole I enjoyed this chapter in the saga of the end-of-the-world.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

Guidelines for safely visiting and stocking Little Free Libraries during the COVID-19 pandemic, from the LFL site here.

I noticed this new LFL listed on the LFL-site map and wanted to drop some BC books there. Turns out the moment I got there the heavens opened and I had to try and get the books inside during a torrential downpour! (Made the photo a bit fuzzy, too.) Anyway, hope someone enjoys the book!
