I got this softcover from an online seller. It's a classic account of the first ascent of the Eiger's North Wall in 1938, by a party of four (originally two separate teams of two who joined up to complete the climb), including author Harrer. The book includes a lot of history of Alpinism, and details the unsuccessful attempts that led up to the eventual success - with some of those failed attempts including the most harrowing and heart-wrenching situations imaginable. (One of the things that makes the Eiger climbs so unusual is that they take place within view of the telescopes at the local hotels. The immediacy of having each misstep witnessed - but with the witnesses helpless to offer any aid - makes for a strange vibe indeed.)
The book features an update that changes the author's views on some of his earlier writings - and that reveals the fate of some of the climbers who went missing.
