It took hold from the get, relinquished a bit in the middle, then pulled you back in with a smack to the face.
I really enjoyed his writing style, and the story itself (from mid-90s) easily withstood the test of time. It is a kooky coming-of-age for late bloomers. Farcical culture clashes compete with descriptions of culinary delights--that oft overlooked element of setting up scenes: but what were they eating?! Japan's just magical that way...
