I got this hardcover, with illustrations by Brad Sneed, from Better World Books. It's a retelling of "Cinderella" in the heart of Appalachia, with heroine Rose finding herself put upon by her father's new wife and daughters. When a "real rich feller - made his fortune in sowbellies and grits" decides to throw a party in hopes of finding a wife, the jealous stepsisters keep Rose from any chance of attending. Cue the fairy godparent, in the form of a... talking pig? Yep! [We get zero explanation of why the pig has these powers, but it's rather cute.]
Some nice notes include Rose's reaction to the glass slippers: "Well," said Rose, tryin' to be polite, "they're not too pract'cal for square dancin', but they sure are purty." And some might find the conclusion a bit more upbeat than some of the darker original versions; here, Rose actually forgives her miserable stepsisters, and apparently it worked, since ever after they "never gave 'er a moment o' grief or heartache".
And Rose and Seb (the sowbelly-and-grits guy) do indeed live happily ever after - and are last seen, greyhaired but hale, holding hands in their swing while the pig relaxes underneath!
