From the back cover:
"Detective Peter Porteous is called to Cranwell Lake where the body of a teenager has been discovered. After trawling through the missing persons files, he deduces that the corpse is Michael Grey, an enigmatic and secretive young man who was reported missing by his foster parents in the early seventies. Four country prison officer Hannah Morton, this news is the shock of her life. Michael was once her boyfriend, and she had been with him the night he disappeared. The report that a body has been found brings back dreaded and long buried memories from her past..."
This book was written before Cleeves made her breakthrough with Vera Stanhope and Shetland series. I like both of those series a lot but this one is not as good as those. The start was very slow, building the background seemed to take forever. It got a lot better after Peter Porteous and Hannah Morton finally met. A lot of what happened was very easy to guess and the culprit was not a huge surprise. The motive was rather thin and unbelievable. The book was ok but nothing special.
