This is another of those books that I heard that were supposed to be one of those books that you should read... but it never seemed all that interesting.

But I ran across a pretty copy of it one day and it was thin, so I figured why not. I'm actually very glad that I read this book. It was delightful.

It carefully draws out the characters in clear lines while the story continues to progress so there is no boredom. I could almost feel that I was in the boat with him. I thought to myself through the whole ordeal that this logically could not end well. And it doesn't in the straightforward sense.

One battle is lost outright, but in losing it, he gains something else entirely, almost by accident... real respect and the long last memory of legendom. I liked the little boy, though he was more absent then present.

It was a great story that I've given a copy to my daughter to read. And since your wishlist says that you want books off the "1001 Books To Read Before You Die" that were originally written in English, this one definitely qualifies! :)

Here's to hoping I've made you a 'match made in heaven.' ;)

I must admit, this is my first Hemingway. I was pleasantly surprised. Hemingway takes time to describe the scenes well. He does a nice job of painting the story in your mind.
This book is a quick read (3 or so hours) and the one that earned Hemingway his Pulitzer. Supposedly this is Hemingway's development of a true story that he heard about an old fisherman who makes the catch of his life.
