Journal Entry 1 by wingGoryDetailswing from Nashua, New Hampshire USA on Wednesday, April 15, 2020
I found this softcover in some bags of books left by the Little Free Library in Lincoln Park, Nashua. Will be passing the books along to various LFLs when circumstances permit.

I enjoyed the book when it first came out - more for the scenes of childhood in a small town than the horror scenes, though. Some of the descriptions of Bill on his bike made me flash back to the days when I felt happiest pedaling around the neighborhood on my old Schwinn...

Some spoilers follow:

Many of the horror scenes were quite effective, too, but here and there it just got silly - the "deadlights" bit didn't impress me. [And then there was that inexplicable bit where the children somehow decided they needed to bond by doing something so out of place (not to mention profoundly disturbing) that it made me wonder whether King wasn't trying to see if his editors really would let him get away with anything...] But for the most part the book addresses all the too-real fears of childhood, from unrequited crushes to miserable home lives; for some kids, a werewolf would be the least of their problems.

I enjoyed the 1990 mini-series adaptation of the book (though, again, the "deadlights" didn't work well for me).

[There's a TV Tropes page on the novel that may be of interest, but do beware of spoilers.]
