All the way from Scotland, caught today at Riddik Cafe.
Looking for something different! This could be the read for you.
'Strange' is the word that kept coming to mind as I read. The protagonist is the strange child of the strange couple that moves into a strange town. This child explores a strange zoo run by some strange women and learns about the history of their relationships with some strange men. However, once I was able to set the strangeness aside I realised the story was all about self-perception, coming of age, marginalised people (including people of colour, non-binary people, people with disabilities and mental illness), feminism, animal rights and individual freedom. Thought provoking...

Being a fan of QI, I am interested to see what she writes and this sounds great.
Set in small-town USA during the 1960s, this funny and poignant novel charts the development of ten-year old Dorothy who discovers that she has more to aspire to than the future roles of wife and mother.
