Journal Entry 2 by wingearthcaroleannewing at Falkirk, Scotland United Kingdom on Friday, March 27, 2020
In 1960s Santa Teresa, California, a child is kidnapped and never returned. Twenty years later, Michael Sutton contacts private detective Kinsey Millhone for help. He claims to have recalled a strange and disturbing memory which might just provide the key to the mystery. He believes he stumbled across the kidnappers burying Mary Claire Fitzhugh's body. Michael's account is indistinct he was only six years old at the time of the kidnapping - and even members of his family try to discredit his evidence. But Kinsey is certain there is something vital within Michael's recollections. And while stepping back into the past, Kinsey discovers more about her own history too...

I’m a little bit disappointed. We’ve gone from a little change to her writing style to differing timescales which means this one seems to have a slightly muddled plot. It is not as intriguing as some of her others and I was worried about the ending as the pages diminished. Definitely not as good as others in this series.

I agree with you earthcaroleanne, not a great book in the series but ok. Was the Michael Sutton memory explained in the end?

Michael Sutton, a man with a childhood memory of seeing something buried is referred to the police to PI Kinsey Millhone, when he realises that it might have been at the same time that a local girl went missing. Michael himself is troubled and the veracity of his story is uncertain, but Kinsey thinks there is something in it, and the troubles she sees in his family make her think more about her difficult relationship with her own. Enjoying this series.

I really got drawn in towards the end but felt that it ended all rather abruptly and the epilogue was used to tidy it all up. A brief visit to the retired policemen who I always enjoy, more family stuff and another cold case! I prefer these books coming from other people’s perspectives as well as Kinsey and I think the story takes off better that way.

Journal Entry 16 by wingMaranlinwing at Burlington, Ontario Canada on Saturday, April 3, 2021
This one was not as exciting as most of the others in the series. Some of the descriptions and history of various places were a bit boring and did not seem particularly relevant to the story. The last few chapters were more interesting, but the ending not so dramatic as some of the other books. In some ways I didn't mind because I get so nervous when Kinsey gets herself into dangerous situations!

This has arrived safely in Switzerland where I am currently awaiting my second vaccination - scheduled for mid-May. This book looks very well travelled in that the spine is a bit tired, but it looks like everything is intact, and there's a very nice bookmark included - thanks!
It feels like we're hitting the home stretch with this series. I have enjoyed it greatly and am so glad for the spiral which has let me read them (almost) all (so far).
I'll be reading this one here and then hopefully sending it on from France once travel becomes simpler. Thanks so much for making available and sending.

We are drawing to a close on this bookcrossing spiral of Grafton's alphabet series... only five left after this. There were a number of criss-crossing stories here, and occasionally I was confused by the new characters being introduced - had we seen them before? This copy has been well-read and I did a fair amount of flipping to and fro myself, trying to figure out who people were and what I should be remembering about them... Eventually I was able to keep them straight.
This was a good read, although I am still a bit unsure about the sequence of things. Reading other reviews from the spiral I see I am not the only person wondering if Sutton's memory was clarified or not.
It was interesting to see how demonized the hippies were... not quite the way I experienced that, but I guess for the country club set, it would make sense. Anyway, a good read... Thanks as ever for making these available.

This one had my almost undivided attention, so it went smoothly and I was able to pick up the clues as the story went forward. Aside from the backbone, the family reunions felt uncomfortable and there's a certain shade of wrapping things up that may as well be just me noting there are so few books left.
