"Nothing links person to person like the frequent passage from hand to hand of a good book."
I loved this story. I read it as a precursor to a trip with Viking along the Danube, ending in Budapest. I totally fell in love with Budapest and recommend it to anyone who loves great cities.
This story is about crime reporter Zsigmond Gordon in late 1930's Budapest. He comes across a crime scene where a beautiful young prostitute is found dead. The unusual thing about her is that she is Jewish. He becomes obsessed with uncovering what happened to her: how she died but also how she became a prostitute. Wow, the names of people and places are complex, I have no idea how words are pronounced in Hungarian. The story and main characters were engaging, and I enjoyed the intrigue.
A wandering book -- the karma of literature!
