I guess nobody will be taking journeys anywhere, but luckily this is small enough to send overseas, so I began reading it. Cautionary tales.
I know Hungarian Tokay wine well, it is sweet dessert wine. Me and my brother both used to get two bottles a year, one for Christmas and one for birthday which we happen to share in May (five years apart). Our parents believed in teaching children to drink alcohol in a civilized way and thus spoiled us the fun of tasting the forbidden fruit for the first time in our teens and drinking ourselves legless, like all our friends did. If that had happened now I think we would have been taken to custody.

A strange curve in history: On page 15 all sorts of major or minor catastrophes are mentioned, among them that King Gustavus of Sweden conquered Russian Finland. The last time I opened a history book Finland was first a part of Sweden, then and only then a part of Russia. Although I do not know if any of those other catastrophes mentioned really took place... (shame on me).
Off to the winner of April Showers!
OMG!!! I can't believe you found a book that fits into a regular envelope!!! Thankyou! :O)
What a lovely funny little book! It's renewed my interest in Tokay, somehow I don't think I'll find it here though :O)

"'The devil gave the woman a nudge: "Look at that belt full of money peeping out from under the butcher's shirt!"'
Written for a local German journal and published in 1811, these fabulous, funny, jewel-like miniature tales describe con men, tricksters, disasters, murders, rascals and lovers, and include Franz Kafka's favourite story."

I liked these little short stories. It was fun that they were from different parts of the world, even Sweden. Thank you for sharing. I sent this to the winner of the Mail a Garden sweepstake that I held after I won, it was sent over a week ago.

And it arrived today. Thank you, gaboyd, for this little book full of little stories and with an interesting sounding title. This seems to like travelling between Europe and Australia/NZ.

Finally read these amusing and varied little stories. Well, the title story was rather ghastly, but most of them were amusing and witty. True to the time of their publication (more than 200 years ago), many had a moral teaching in the end, like:
"From this we can learn how easy it is to be tricked if you believe what is told you by any vagrant..." (p. 11)
"Remember: Other people's property can eat into your own just as fresh snow swallows up the old." (p. 45)

These were some stories! The story which gave the booklet its name was terrible! Uhh! Some stories were quite nice. Nice little book it was. I did not understand the King Gustavus part in one of the stories. My history book did not tell such a story.
