I enjoyed the first couple of volumes of this series, so I was pleased to find this one on sale at Newbury Comics. It picks up from the events of Volume 3, with Hachiken continuing his agricultural education after returning to school from his summer job at Aki's family's ranch. His first task: to deal with the pork he bought as a way to deal with his feelings over seeing his beloved pig Pork Bowl sent to the butcher's! The story manages to convey the issues of raising animals for meat, the emotions involved, and the duty to provide them with as good a life and as easy a death as possible - while throwing in some humor re the growing enthusiasm of the student body for Hachiken's bounty. The surprise arrival of his brother leads to his sharing some of the smoked meat with his parents - could this be the beginning of a thaw in his relationship with his academically-snobbish father? There's a charming "let's put on a show"-vibe here too, as the other students pile on to the smoking-the-meat process, adding other products (cheese, eggs) to see how they react to being smoked.

Another tale is a humorous spin on crop circles and alien sightings - though it turns out that all the suspicious nighttime activity has a very different explanation. [I was tickled at the ag-students' reactions to crop circles - they're understandably peeved at the damage to crops and the general waste of time...]

Back at the equestrian division, Hachiken finds himself declared the new vice president of the club, as the senior class moves on. And while trying to prove himself as "the guy who can't say no" - as in, always available to help - he thinks he's spotted a problem for Aki and the hunky baseball player Komaba, but both of them say it's none of his business...

There's also a cute chat between Hachiken and the school's diminutive president - who's seated on a hay bale at the time, petting some of the barn cats. He gives good advice - and then asks for some help getting down from the bale!

[There's a TV Tropes page on the series, with some entertaining tidbits. And an
anime adaptation that I want to watch. And for a different manga take on agricultural school, try Moyasimon.]
