Astonishingly impressive! One of my top nonfiction reads of all time. This offers a remarkably even-handed, nuanced, and complex look at a horrific situation. The book has much to say about gender identity, youth, the criminal justice system (especially for juveniles), families, actions and consequences, and much more. Extremely well-written and exceedingly difficult to put down. I cannot recommend this highly enough!

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
This is headed out as part of the wishlist tag game. Enjoy!
Thank you so much for sending me a wishlist book.
I'm finally reading this book!! I'm 53% into it so far and enjoying quite a bit up to this point.
Thank you for sending me this wishlist book, ReallyBookish!
The 57 Bus is an incredible read. It's a quick read and also a very readable book despite the difficult subject matter.
I learned a lot from reading The 57 Bus and felt the author did an impressive job writing about gender identity and the criminal justice system, especially as it pertains to juvenile offenders. I highly recommend this book too!
Btw, I live about 30-45 minutes away from Oakland, California by car... Driving time varies depending on traffic and which part of Oakland one wants to visit... So this book made for interesting reading about local history.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
Happy Reading!! I left this book instead this cute floral themed Little Free Library.
I was on this site registering a couple of books I'm about to finish and release, and thought I'd see if there was anything out there in the neighborhood. I was intrigued by the title and the back story. I grew up in Oakland. My dad taught English at Castlemont High School from 1959-1990, and my mother taught Math at Oakland Tech when she wasn't raising my brother and I. I road the 57 bus through East Oakland from my school to meet my dad every day in the early 1980s. It will be interesting to see what's changed (a lot) and what hasn't (probably also a lot) since then. Thank you for sharing!
12/21/2022: This one's reached the top of my stack... going to start reading it tonight.

Wow.
I wasn't sure about picking this one up so close to the holiday because... well... the subject matter is heavy. Intense. But I'm so glad I did. I've read reviews that found the writing unclear and repetitive. That wasn't my experience. This is "depth & context" journalism at its very finest. It introduces you to the real people and the complex stories that a five word headline and a nine second sound bite can't possibly convey.
As I suspected, a lot has changed in Oakland. And a lot has not.
It made me think... a lot. I came away with the awareness that we attempt to make sense of the chaos that surrounds us by putting things in "binary" boxes. Male/Female. Gay/Straight. Good/Evil. Vilians/Victims. Innocent/Guilty. It's almost never that simple. Thanks to both of you who chose to share what appears to be the only copy of this title registered on bookcrossing. I'm glad I read it -- it's changed how I see the world.
