I was expecting to really enjoy this book, but I just found it predictable. I never liked any of the characters. Jet is so unlikable, I wanted to ask Marshall, “what it WRONG with you?” They became boring. How could Marshall betray his friend who saved his life. I got tired of conversation after conversation where whoever had the upper hand and then the other did. Also, the ending where Marshall goes off with Paul was unbelievalble. The story is similar to the Penn Cage series but with a different main character returning to the south to grapple with the usual issues of corruption and a past that he struggles to leave behind. With a few changes it could easily have been a Penn Cage novel.

This book was my introduction to Greg Iles' writing. This book definitely had many twists and turns with a lot of ethical decisions to make. I loved the southern feel to it and the whole good vs. evil theme had you cheering or jeering for some of the characters in this book. I agree with booklady331's opinion of Marshall and the affair he was carrying out. I guess Marshall was flawed, but not to the extent of most of the character's in the book. A very entertaining book!
Reserved for an upcoming bookbox.
