Alice Hoffman is at her electrifying best in this fairy tale for grown-ups. The story begins with a little girl who makes a wish one snowy night and ruins her life. She grows up with a splinter of ice in her heart until one day, standing by her kitchen window, she is struck by lightning.

Instead of killing her, this cataclysmic event sparks off a new beginning. She seeks out Lazarus Jones, a fellow lightning survivor. He is her opposite, a burning man whose breath can boil water and whose touch scorches. As an obsessive love affair begins between them, both are forced to hide their most dangerous secrets - what turned one to ice and the other to fire.

The Ice Queen is a haunting story of passion, loss, second chances and the secrets that come to define us, if we're not careful.

Totally not what I was expecting but I got drawn into the story from page 1 and totally wrapped up on our unnamed girl's life. Being German I grew up with Grimm's fairytales (rather than Danish author Anderson)so I could see where Alice Hoffman drew her inspirations and characters from. But in the end it was a story about life , death, love and second chances and the last few sentences brought tears to my eyes.

Journal Entry 5 by wingNu-Kneeswing at Knaresborough, North Yorkshire United Kingdom on Saturday, June 20, 2020
Thank you very much, kinedi. Books and chocolate in one lovely parcel, who could ask for anything better? Not me!
I've read several books by Alice Hoffman in the past but not for several years now so I'm looking forward to catching up with her writing style again.
I doubt it'll be long before I start reading it. I've been getting through my unread books quite quickly recently, and I always give books registered by other BookCrossers priority over books I've registered myself, so this is jumping way up the dwindling piles . . .
Thank you again :-)

A beautiful, lyrical fairy tale of fire and ice. I loved it!
Thank you again, kinedi - and a big thank you for the enclosed chocolate bar. I hadn't come across those before and think I now have a new favourite . . . delicious!

Given to tree-hugger when we had a garden meeting this afternoon, our first get-together since before coronavirus hibernation! It was lovely to see you - and a special thank you to JFC for the scones!
This sort of adult fairy story should be just up your street . . .

I'm afraid I'm having to clear out a lot of bookcrossing books unread, which I feel very bad about, but needs must. I don't read much any more, so having hundreds of books on a To Be Read shelf is silly because I know I won't get around to them - they're better off finding new homes where they might get read.
