The Chrysalids (United States title: Re-Birth) is a science fiction novel by British writer John Wyndham, first published in 1955 by Michael Joseph. It is the least typical of Wyndham's major novels, but regarded by some as his best. An early manuscript version was entitled Time for a Change.
Really, really good read. Picked this up at the charity shop not thinking much of it and read it in barely two days.
I’ve never heard of the author but I will be reading the rest of his books for sure.
This story is great food for thought and although I’d like to write more about it I really don’t want to mistakingly post any spoilers!

Off to the winner of Mail a Garden Sweepstakes!
Thank you soo much!
Unlike you, I am a great fan of this writer, so I'm looking forward to reading this novel which is new to me. :)

Currently reading it. :)
I can't believe I read this book back in 2007 (as part of a bookring), because I didn't remember it at all; however, my journal comments at that time still apply:
"Though the metaphors are obvious (sometimes, too obvious!), this disturbing story about intolerance and bigotry is a real page-turner...
I was specially fond of little Petra, who couldn't quite control her "gift" and kept shocking the other "thought-shapers". Not so fond of Rosalind, a bit haughty for my taste, though David, the narrator, tries to explain the reasons why."
I am a real fan of Mr Wyndham's work... He first came to my attention when I watched the classic film version of The Midwich Cuckoos, and he has never disappointed me since then.
Thanks for giving me this chance to find "an old friend", Claudia; I will probably keep this copy for some time. :)

Thank you for this book! :)
"John Wyndham takes the reader into the anguished heart of a community where the chances of breeding true are less than fifty per cent and where deviations are rooted out and destroyed as offences and abominations."
