Isn't it ironic that Tom Wolfe should write a book called Bonfire of the Vanities?
I wonder where he looked for inspiration into his main character, an unappealing over-achiever with (nevertheless) a highly inflated opinion of himself? (the mirror, perhaps? boom boom)
The best thing about this book is the title. Beyond that it is worth much less than it is often acclaimed. In reality, it is the flimsy work of a hack journalist trying and failing to write fiction.
if you want to read about the greed of wall street in the 80's and 90's go to the non fiction shelves and pick up the daisy chain, den of thieves, barbarians at the gate or liar's poker
