Later: There's so much going on in this book, yet it unfolds slowly, in the form of journal entries by young Stephen, a Chinese man who's sent to his family's summer home in Japan after he contracts tuberculosis. This is in 1937, with the story unfolding over a year, and taking place during the first year of the war between Japan and China. Given the way that war would become part of WWII, it presents quite a dark background to the story, and does affect some of the characters and their relationships, but there's a lot more happening - from long-past relationships thwarted by class, family, or even the scourge of leprosy to Stephen's own hopes and fears.

I’m glad I chose this book as one of my summer reads! One of my favorite quotes: “Even if you walk the same road a hundred times, you’ll find something different each time.” I’ve never heard of the bookcrossing until now, so I’ll be passing this along!
