A debut novel with heart. June Jones, the introverted library assistant, has lived a boring life for the past eight years. Instead of following her dreams of going to university and becoming a writer, she stayed home to care for her dying mother. Now, she has no friends: her cat Alan Bennett (formerly her mother's cat) hates her; and she spends most nights and weekends staying at home reading her favorite books like "Matilda" and "Pride and Prejudice."

When it is announced that the council is planning on closing six libraries. one of which is her place of employment, some of the patrons form a group to prevent it. All they want is to save their library from closing. From protesting with placards to occupying the library, these patrons, now becoming June's friends, are doing their best to keep the library open.

Will FOCL (Friends of Chalcot Library) succeed in their quest? Will June join them even if she'll lose her job? What will happen to the Chalcot library and their most loyal patrons?

An unexpected ending...

I have either registered it, or received it from another person who is willing to share it, too. Consider logging onto www.bookcrossing.com and letting us know where it is been and where it is going next. It can be done anonymously or join the site as a member.

A small box of books, which includes this ARC. I found this novel charming as the villagers and one of the librarians fight for this library. Hope you enjoy it or send to your local LFL for new life.

Was going thru my shelves and came across this one, so decided to read it last night.

June Jones has been merely "existing" the last 8 years since her mother's death. The sameness of routine - basically stepping into her mother's old job as Library Assistant and keeping things the same as when she was alive, to the point of even eating the same food her mother enjoyed for Monday night supper- losing herself in the past to the point where she had no friends or "life" per se.

We find out that 2 events had formed her existence. The first was "losing" her childhood best friend, and the humiliation she suffered at the hands of her ex-friends "new" friends. The second was her mother's diagnosis and subsequent battle with cancer and setting aside her dreams to care for her mother.

Eight years later she finds herself with the real possibility of losing her job and the only life she has known. A timid bookworm who believes she has no friends and nothing noteworthy to show for her 28 yrs. When patrons of the library form a group to try to stop the closing of the library she finds herself caught between the need to help them and the fear of losing her job if she does. Instead she finally finds herself and the true meaning of friendship, love and regrets.

A gem of a story with some heartbreaking and feel good moments. This was a very good read!
