My favourite independent bookstore is closing (the owner is retiring) so they're having a big sale, and I picked this up at the sale this evening.

I have a strong interest in history, especially the WWII era, and I am pretty excited about this find. My grandmother was a Scottish War Bride; throughout the course of the war she was a British woman on the homefront. She died when I was just 3 and my mother (her daughter) died a few short years later, so I only know a little bit about my grandmother's life back in Scotland. I know this book can't tell me about her specifically, but I am eager to read about what life was like for other women in a similar position and I hope that it will help me to remember more/better understand what the lives of such women were like at that time.

I have an idea about releasing this book already, so it will probably jump the queue and head up towards the top of my TBR pile.

I have finally finished reading this book! I started it fairly right away when I got it, but some crazy circumstances during the pandemic meant that I didn't have access to it for a long time so that threw a spanner into things.

At times I found this book a little dry, but I also found it interesting. I even found it rather inspirational at times, as I have grappled with today's set of difficult circumstances. They're very different in some ways, but they certainly have their similarities too and I think I related to this book much more than I would have not much more than a year ago.

Adelaide Hunter Hoodless, founder of the WI, was actually from a little town next door to my city; there are a couple of places there that relate to her, so I plan to leave this book at one of those sites next time I am in St. George. I've been meaning to do a couple of things in the town anyway, so hopefully I'll be able to get out that way soon. I realize this book is about the WI in Britain specifically, but I still think it's interesting to consider what a huge difference was made to world history by this group that was founded by a local woman.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

In celebration of St. George's Day, we decided to have take out from The Dragon in St. George (they have an amazing veggie burger); on the way we stopped at the Adelaide Hunter Hoodless Memorial and I left this book. It is in a protective bag on top of the picnic table nearest the cairn.

If you've found this book, thanks for picking it up and checking out its journal! If you're new to bookcrossing, welcome. We'd love it if you'd stick around with us a while. I really hope that you enjoy both this book and the whole bookcrossing experience!

This book was released as part of an annual release challenge I do here on Bookcrossing-- the "52 Towns in 52 Weeks" Release Challenge. Obviously I'm not travelling much right now, but St. George was Town #8 for me this year.
