Extraordinary story based on the wartime experiences of Dita Kraus..... the librarian of the title. Initially based in Auschwitz Birkenau, 14 year old Dita in in the "family hut" 32 with her mother and acts as librarian to 8 books which are carefully hidden at the end of each day. As the allies move closer into German territory, Dita and many others are moved on to Bergen Belsen where they are ultimately freed..... however Dita's mother does not survive the ill-health from surviving in such turgid conditions. The book concludes with Dita's life post-war.

I struggled with this one, as I needed to read cheerier books at the moment. However, I have spotted it on a wishlist, so it will be heading off to a new reader rather than languishing on my bookshelf.
