Historical fiction set in India at the time leading up to the Sepoy Revolt. (1857).
I am unsure whether the author assumed the reader knows more about India in this time period or felt that the knowledge was not necessary to the story. A number of historical figures appear in the story. Only a few were vaguely familiar to me.
The author does depict the range of attitudes among the British toward India and the Indians that seem quite realistic and show the negatives of colonialism.
The romance at the heart of the story is pretty typical-various obstacles to the relationship (including internal) arise and keep the lovers apart.
