The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton - V Good

I think most people know that I love a crime novel. In particular vintage/golden age crime and my favourite is Agatha Christie. What is probably less well known is that I love science fiction too. This book ticked all the boxes. Agatha Christie meets Groundhog Day meets, hmmm, Quantum Leap?

A Country House setting. A house party. Every day Aiden Bishop wakes up inhabiting a different guest. Every day the Hosts' daughter Evelyn is murdered. Every day Aiden trys to work out who is the murderer and tries to save her. The thing is, he doesn't remember everything from the previous host, sometimes he doesn't even remember who he really is let alone why he's there.

Now that sounds confusing, and in some respects it is, but it's only the confusion he feels as he awakes and doesn't know who he is or where he is or why..... until it dawns on him what is going on, often as he witnesses the same scene as yesterday but from a different perspective. Slowly he (and the reader) builds up a fuller picture. You begin to feel you know what's going on and that's when the author throws in a twist or two. Some you see coming, most you don't. Certainly, I didn't see the final twist.

A great read, thoroughly recommended.

Unique and really excellent read, though with hindsight, not one I should have picked up during a period of personal anxiety (work stress followed by level 4 lockdown announcement). For most of the novel, Aiden is living in a state of high anxiety and confusion and I found this exacerbated my own somewhat, so I read slowly and sparingly. The ending pulled things together neater than I'd imagined though, and I feel satisfied now to have read it all. My next lockdown read however, will be something more gentle.

I couldn’t resist bumping this one up Mt. TBR. I finished it yesterday and it drew me in! Thanks for sending this wishlist book! I really enjoyed this Groundhog Day-style murder mystery.

SPOILERS AHEAD —>

I was thinking after reading it that if this was a YA it would be a trilogy and the next step would be to bring down the dystopian/utopian government.

I would have liked to see a bit more. We don’t get Aiden reacting to his real face and memories returning. Or Anna’s reaction to who she was, what all she had done, and how she feels about all of it in relation to her new outlook and what it means about Aiden.

I’m also somewhat reminded of an episode of Stargate (2 episodes really). It starts with the episode Prisoners and concludes with the episode Past and Present.

I'm claiming this from the To The Stars bookbox. (Interestingly, the novel was published as The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle in the US. I didn't know there was an international exchange rate for deaths!) The premise sounds intriguingly twisty!

Later: Very twisty indeed, though it turns out there are meta-characters who are aware of what's going on and can helpfully tip off our poor protagonist as he finds himself in a different body each time the day re-sets (with bonus body-jumps back into a sadly battered one if he drops off, is knocked out, or is killed in between daily cycles). Seems he's in a contest with other body-jumping souls to find out who murdered the titular Evelyn Hardcastle, getting to experience the events of the day over and over again in a different host each time - which means he's often having to scamper around to ensure that the notes his previous host received are planted in time. Lots of similarities to The Time Traveler's Wife in that sense, though in that one the traveler wasn't repeating the same day over and over - and got to keep the same body, though not always safely. And I've read other "Groundhog Day"-style stories with the do-it-over-until-you-get-it-right theme, though most of those stuck with one body. This one's mix of elements make it very complicated, and - unfortunately for me - I found most of the characters less than likeable, so that after a while I didn't really care who killed whom; I just wanted to get out of that horrible house {wry grin}!

[There's a TV Tropes page on the book, which I won't look at until I've read the book!]
