Whilst never making light of the many luxuries the Queen enjoys, Bennett nevertheless makes her a sympathetic character, exploring ideas such as duty versus pleasure (of reading), the public and staff's expectation of a monarch, and how the need for the Queen to be seen as impartial affects her very right to an opinion - something everyone else is allowed to possess.

REVIEW:-"Much to my surprise this book made me feel very emotional at times as well as making me laugh on other occasions. I would very much like to meet the Queen but I doubt that will happen, although she did once wave at me while being driven through the streets of Norwich. Also of course she loves my home county of Norfolk and spends a lot of time at Sandringham which I've visited a few times.
I am a keen royalist and feel that I know quite a lot about the Queen and I think that Alan Bennett has summed up her character very well. I can imagine her enjoying her reading and saying some of the things he has her say.
I was rather shocked at one very vulgar paragraph included and felt it was unnecessary but will say no more about that.
I loved the bit where the Queen, whilst discussing her subjects reading preferences with them heard that they were reading Harry Potter,- "But to this the Queen (who had no time for fantasy) invariably said briskly 'Yes, One is saving that for a rainy day' and passed swiftly on". That's a shame Your Majesty-you don't know what you missed!
Although I know the book is fiction I feel that the author has accurately summed up our sovereign's character but I'm so glad that his prediction on the very last page hasn't happened."
This book is just too good to wild release so I'll hang onto it until I can use it in a wishlist tag or send as a RABCK.

It is now yours to do as you like with it, pass it to a friend or just leave it somewhere different for someone else to find and help it with its' journey. Of course if you can't bear to part with it at the moment then keep it, but please let me know that you have found it. If you join bookcrossing, which is free and spam-free, you can follow the book on its' travels as you will get an email each time it changes hands, but if you prefer to remain anonymous, that's fine too. Please also say what you intend to do with the book next. Thanks for coming onto the site to let me know you have found the book.

I already have books travelling in many countries around the world-a list can be found on my bookcrossing profile.

When re-releasing this book please be aware that airports are not a good place to leave books unless they have a specific book exchange shelf or area, due to security problems, so they may well just be disposed of. Also charity shops may well discard books that have been labelled in any way and they mostly chose only the books in the very best condition
to place on their shelves and discard the rest-so another bad release option.

A quick but very amusing tale that is sure to strike a chord with anyone who loves to read.
The prose, in the early parts at least, was reminiscent of the fairy tales I loved as a child (well still do actually!) & it was impossible not to hear the Queen’s clipped tones in the dialogue.

From the start to it's surprising ending, this was a joy to read, thanks for sharing daff & I intend to share it again soon :o)
