A young woman, Rita Ferris, and her little son die at the hands of an unknown killer, and the past and present collide violently for Charlie Parker. Still raw from the slayings of his wife and daughter and the events surrounding the hunt for their killer, The Travelling Man, 'Bird' has retreated to the wintry Maine landscapes of his youth. But his return reawakens the ghosts of his past, forcing him to join the hunt for Billy Purdue, Rita's ex-husband and the chief suspect in the slayings. As the death toll mounts, it becomes clear that someone else is also hunting for Billy Purdue, someone who seems to know Bird almost as well as he knows himself and the true answer to the puzzle lies thirty years in the past, in a tree with strange fruit, in the troubled history of Bird's own grandfather and in the violent origins of a mythical killer: the monster known as Caleb Kyle.

Overall this was a thoroughly enjoyable book, if a little far-fetched. There was a point in the middle where I wasn’t sure – maybe it needed more editing – however by the end I was completely hooked. Nonetheless, I’m not sure the people of Dark Hollow could ever recover from the high body count in their streets.

Having read the first book some time ago I was pleased to get book number 2 and it didn't disappoint. It is very violent and not for the squeamish and there's a supernatural element to it also which may offend some people but I enjoyed it though as an early reviewer says it is a highly improbable tale especially what Bird manages to do despite being shot.
