Normal People
14 journalers for this copy...
Connell and Marianne grow up in the same small town in the west of Ireland, but the similarities end there. In school, Connell is popular and well-liked, while Marianne is a loner. But when the two strike up a conversation - awkward but electrifying - something life-changing begins.
Normal People is a story of mutual fascination, friendship and love. It takes us from that first conversation to the years beyond, in the company of two people who try to stay apart but find they can't.

Connell and Marianne grow up in the same small town in Ireland, with very different family backgrounds. Connell is popular and sporty, Marianne is aloof and friendless, but the two end up drawn together over and over again. Marianne's abusive family background leaves her open for more abuse (unfortunately the research bears this out - people who've been in abusive relationships do tend to end up in more because they've somehow learnt that this is how relationships should be and the cycle is very difficult to break), Connell's insecurities lead him to treat Marianne badly too. This is a very original and well-written book, but I found it really distressing to read.

Read this is in 2 days! Could not put it down, not because I loved it, but because I was drawn to this sad cat and mouse chase story.
It is a frustating story, a never-ending one it seems...
Thanks for sharing, Cross-patch!

Frustrating, as estelle1806 said, is the right word I think. My goodness, toxic relationships, abusive relationships, gaslighting, depression, suicide, it's all there, which does not make for an easy read. Fortunately there's some love, tenderness and lightheartedness in there too. I would have liked some parts to have been worked out better, and not wrapped up as easily, but all in all a good pick for the roundabout. I don't think I'd have picked this up otherwise. Thanks for sharing!

Good story and somewhat recognizable for me, this inability to become more than what you have been made perhaps. A change outwards, but inwards still containing the same broken bits. The ending was frustrating though, I had hoped for a 'miracle', but alas there aren't any miracles in life.
A bit bleak, but also lighthearted as Fifna said. A very frustrating thing to see as a close bystander, it's a 'pick yourself up by the bootstraps' kind of feeling.

You know that these two misfits are perfect for each other, they know it and you wait for them to be happy.
So beautifully depicted and so sad but so right. Not for the happy ones who never had doubts about themselves, they don't understand.

This book has arrived in Canada. I'd already read this book earlier in the year, when it had been chosen for the 2020 Tournament of Books. However, I plan to reread a few passages and then add my comments here before sending it to the next reader.

I have mixed feelings about this book. I can't say I liked it a great deal, as I had trouble relating to the main characters. I felt for their ordeals, but at the same time, they frustrated me. Still, I admire the quality of Sally Rooney's writing. The spare prose reminded me a little bit of Hemingway's works, which I'd adored when I was much younger. Perhaps I am getting too old to fully appreciate this coming-of-age story, but I can see why it has gotten so much acclaim.

What is it about not using speech marks? Is there a shortage? Maybe we should start a campaign and people can donate them to authors to use properly - here's some to start us off """""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""
So, rant over, although I did find this the most annoying thing about this book and totally unnecessary. Maybe the author was trying to show how weird and out-there her characters and situations were, but to be honest, I found nothing really unique or interesting about either. Two teenagers learning to grow up and manage their feelings for each other ... been done before.
So sorry, not for me. I got bored after about 60 pages and couldn't bring myself to pick it up again to finish. Maybe I'll watch the TV program instead as that seemed to have some excellent reviews.

Thank you SO much for sending me this, Poodlesister! It's been on my wishlist for a while and I deliberately didn't watch the televised version, preferring to read the book first, as the book is almost always better. It's nice to see so many readers before me, and I will ensure it travels on after me. Thanks also for the gorgeous postcard and the BC labels! X
