This is not an ordinary book: it's a BookCrossing book! BookCrossing books are world travelers - they like to have adventures and make new friends...and every once in a while they even write home to say what they've been doing.

It's a great title for a book, and I was happy to find a copy of this trade paperback at the CUC Thrift Shop.

This was one I was actually looking for - it first caught my eye when I saw an image of the fabulous cover: hand-lettering and illustrations in sky by Sarah Jane Coleman...although my copy has so many award labels on it that some of the artwork is obscured! The image in this journal entry shows it better...

I think the awards are deserved, though: this is a lovely story about friendship and self discovery...and some impressively supportive parents, especially for that time and culture.

I didn't deal with the same issues, but Ari's confusion rings true to me: I spoke to a friend at our high school reunion this past summer - we're a few years older than Ari & Dante - and he said that at age 15 he was definitely still figuring things out; unlike so many of the kids now who know from an early age that they're not straight...

This book is reserved for a wishlist tag.
