This came home in the bookbox. I have never heard of this book, but look forward to reading it.

This is what I love about bookboxes! I never would have discovered this book if it hadn't come home in my bookbox.

It's the story of a child prodigy cellist. His entire life has been about music, and then suddenly he finds himself on the jury of a man who committed murder at a Zen school. That story line was so compelling to me and reminded me of a book I read recently about Zen monks: Eat Sleep Sit (https://www.bookcrossing.com/journal/13942019/)
In both books, the practice of Zen seems brutal and cult-like. I think having read Eat Sleep Sit first, I was prejudiced toward the crime committed by the character in this book, and felt lucky that I'd become familiar with the study of Zen before I read The Soloist -- not that it was necessary to understand the story.

I also played classical flute, so the musical aspects of the book appealed to me, too.

Last but not least, this book was published in 1994 yet did not seem dated at all. I'd like to read more work by this author.

The release location (Queens Public Library at Maspeth) is where the first clue to the book’s location is. Look for a QR code in the bookshelves. There should definitely be a QR code behind a copy of Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson.
