A book about an abusive relationship is not really my cup of tea, but I read it to the end.
Cassie, an anthropologist, and Alex, a famous movie star, meet in Tanzania where she is on a dig and he is filming. She is taken on as advisor to Alex who is playing the role of an anthropologist. They fall in love, marry, and he takes her home to LA. In fact he has three homes, an apartment, a huge mansion, and a ranch, with all the attendant staff, horses, swimming pools, marble bathrooms and gold fittings and closets full of clothes. He is a loving and attentive husband but she doesn't seem to realise how controlling he is. Instead of leaving him the first time he beats her up, or getting him to see a therapist, she stays on, because she knows he didn't really want to hurt her. But then, of course, there wouldn't have been a book.
I preferred the part set in the Pine Ridge reservation, and the Native American legends, the healing scene with sage, the grandparents' wisdom.
