I got this ex-library softcover from Better World Books. It's by Anglo-Canadian author Keith Billington, a nurse, and his wife Muriel, a midwife, as they tried to bring medical help to the Gwich'in people in the Northern Territories in the 1960s. It's a fascinating mix of personal memoir, travel journal, medical casebook, and cultural exploration. The marvels of the far north; the perils of weather, wildlife, solitude; the learning curve of local customs and village relationships... lots going on here! The patients range from sick infants to wounded adults to the occasional under-the-weather sled dog. In some ways it's a kind of All Things Bright and Beautiful transported to the Yukon...
