I found this softcover in this Little Free Library in Lexington MA while dropping off some books of my own. It's about an Italian teenager who gets caught up in WWII - first while helping Jews to escape the growing threat, and later as a German soldier, driving Adolph Hitler!

From the author's introduction and notes, it seems it's a lightly-fictionalized version of the true story of Pino Lella, whose involuntary involvement in WWII altered the course of his life - and that of many others. His interactions with German General Hans Leyers left him guilt-ridden and angry, not least because Leyers apparently cut a deal with prosecutors and escaped penalties for his own war crimes.

I found the author's account of his meeting with Lella more intriguing than the novel itself, but it does give an intriguing look at a less-well-known part of the war.
