This softcover was among the books donated to the public library for distribution to the Little Free Libraries.
I first read the book back in high school, where... it was not really a hit; I suspect it was chosen because it's short, but it isn't the kind of story to appeal to most teens. Upon rereading it recently, I find that it has improved quite a bit since I first read it - or perhaps it's my viewpoint that's changed, or maybe it's just that now it isn't homework! It's never going to be my favorite Eliot but it is worth reading. It's been adapted for the screen a few times, including this 1985 version.
[There's a short TV Tropes page on the novel.]
