I got this softcover from a local Salvation Army thrift shop. (It has some underlining here and there, but it's not too bad.) The subject intrigued me because I knew some Basque people - there's a significant population in the American west, where many of them moved to work as sheepherders. And I've enjoyed other books by Kurlansky, including Cod and Big Oyster.
Later: A pretty thorough history, touching on politics, art, food - and language; their Euskara language is unrelated to other European languages. Festivals, other customs, justice systems, and more...
