I got this softcover from an online seller. Sounds like some interesting psychological suspense.
Later: intriguing, often-creepy story, from the viewpoint of Betty, a woman who's been jealous of her "golden girl" little sister Gloria since childhood. Betty has also become dedicated to the family home, Pipits - but when their mother leaves the house and grounds to Gloria and her husband Henry, Betty's already-dangerous nature gets really, really bad...
Since we only hear things from Betty's point of view, it takes a while to see just how sociopathic she is - and to realize how unbalanced she's become. Between her growing dependence on gin and tranquilizers and her lack of appetite, it's surprising she lasts out the story! Along the way she considers ways to regain her beloved Pipits, first by poisoning Henry (he survives) then by a much more extreme step - which also doesn't turn out as she'd planned, though it triggers major changes in everyone's lives.
Part of the suspense is in whether her plots will succeed or fail, and whether she'll be called to account for her actions. She seems to be quite good at being a karma houdini, though she does get spotted (or at least suspected) here and there. She's not a very likable person, but I have to admit her machinations kept me reading!
In many ways the story reminded me of Mother Love by Domini Taylor; overall I enjoyed that one more, but they both feature unbalanced and dangerously vengeful characters whose actions wreak havoc.
