I've had this softcover on my keeper shelves for quite a while now, and I think it's time it went traveling. It includes a number of vintage tales, most of them not well-known anymore - including the title story, John Polidori's contribution to the eerie-tales contest at the villa where Mary Shelley came up with the concept that became Frankenstein. (Lord Byron was likely the inspiration for the story, and was credited as its author on its initial publication, though both Byron and Polidori lobbied for the correction.)

Not all of the stories here stand the test of time, IMO, but some are quite entertaining, and "The Vampyre" in its role as a prototype for the wealth of vampiric literature that followed is certainly worth reading.
