I got this softcover at the gift shop behind the Borden Bed & Breakfast in Fall River MA for another release copy. (The B&B is in the actual Borden house, still in its original location, though the surrounding neighborhood has changed a lot.) I'd gone to Fall River for afternoon tea at the historic society, in company with a friend who's a distant relative of Lizzie, and couldn't resist checking out the Borden house and other sites associated with the tragedy.

This softcover is one of Geary's "Treasury of Victorian Murder" series of graphic-novel-style re-tellings of famous crimes. And the Borden murders in Fall River MA are perhaps among the best-known of all, if only from the "Lizzie Borden took an axe..." rhyme.

The book goes into considerable detail about the setting, the characters, and the crimes, including a layout of the house and a map of the area, the better to follow the action (and the alibis). The black-and-white woodcut-style graphics help to tone down the violence of the attacks, but the gruesome and bizarre nature of the killings comes through full-force.

Geary includes a number of speculations as to who actually committed the crimes, and adds a section containing facsimiles of the original newspaper articles of the day, making this a very good look into an infamous - and still unsolved - crime...
