A gene mutation and a child is born intersex. Everyone thinks the child is a girl but when she goes through puberty it becomes evident she is intersex, genetically a boy. I was fascinated and found myself crying, I felt such compassion for this child. A person is not a monster for the way they are born. The surgery to fix the problem is appalling and should never be done on a child or anyone who cannot give knowledgeable consent. Even so, I did not love this book. It was well written but the subject matter was disturbing and extremely sad. We would do well to learn to accept and appreciate those who are different from us.
