I got this vintage '70s paperback from Better World Books, for another release copy.
Though he's not one of Agatha Christie's better-known characters, Mr. Harley Quin is my favorite of her creations. This collection includes most of the Quin stories, each one a tale of love and death - though the dead, and the lovers, are not always the characters one thinks they are - and each featuring the "looker-on of life," Mr. Satterthwaite, as he tries to unravel things before the inevitable appearance of the enigmatic Mr. Quin. A woman "cursed with a beautiful face", a ghostly cavalier, a mysterious disappearance, a grief-stricken widow haunted by a painting, and more...
The mood of the Quin stories is more romance-noir than traditional mystery, and by the end of the stories Quin's always-mysterious nature seems to build to something glorious - and terrifying. "...his comfortable little soul shrank back, appalled..." I adore this collection!
[There's a very good audiobook version of this collection, read by Hugh Fraser. And the TV Tropes page on the stories has some entertaining tidbits.]
