Hard to believe this is a first novel! A rich fantasy world with believable (if not always likeable) characters, wonderfully dark and realistic.
Arrived today , will try to get to it asap
Very dark fantasy novel , hard to follow at times , but some interesting characters

Here we go Poodlesister this THE COURT OF BROKEN KNIVES the first of the Empires of Dust trilogy arrived safely last week. It’s two sister books completing the trilogy travelled along with it thank you, book II THE TOWER OF LIVING AND DYING and THE HOUSE OF SACRIFICE, book III. I’m finding I’m wading through this, it’s fairly this slow going for me, with its shed loads of descriptive narrative as Anna Smith-Sparks goes for EPIC big time.
Currently starting chapter sixteen, page 124, and feverishly hoping I am soon going to feel more invested in completing the trilogy. If I find it takes to near the end of book to get a better picture of the principal themes and the overall direction, I maybe just be cross-eyed with irritation as the page total is 468. On reflection the general themes and overall direction are maybe not so much of a mystery really possibly the mystery lies in why I am not totally gripped by this? It’s like an overall setting is presented like pondlife encased in ice and only a few key players skite across the surface like water-boat-men beetles apparently not interacting with each other.

It is the richest empire the world has ever known, and it is also doomed--but only one man can see it.
Haunted by prophetic dreams, Orhan has hired a company of soldiers to cross the desert to reach the capital city. Once they enter the palace, they have one mission: kill the emperor, then all those who remain. Only from the ashes can a new empire be built.
The company is a group of good, ordinary soldiers for whom this is a mission like any other. But the strange boy Marith who walks among them is no ordinary soldier. Though he is young, ambitious, and impossibly charming, something dark hides in Marith's past--and in his blood.
