" With the autumn storms raging, Fair Isle feels cut off from the rest of the world. Trapped, tension is high and tempers become frayed. Enough to drive someone to murder . . . A woman's body is discovered at the renowned Fair Isles bird observatory, with feathers threaded through her hair. The islanders react with fear and anger. Detective Jimmy Perez has no support from the mainland and must investigate the old-fashioned way. He soon realizes that this is no crime of passion - but a murder of cold and calculated intention. There's no way off the island until the storms abate - and so the killer is also trapped, just waiting for the opportunity to strike again."

I found Blue Lightning in a hotel's lobby here in Delphi. I wasn't familiar with this book/author, so I was curious to see what I'll make of it. It turns out it's the 4rth in a series featuring Detective Jimmy Perez and the action on this one takes place on the Fair Island on Shetland, Scotland.

At first I found the setting of the book and the main plot quite interesting, but latter I found that the novel dragged a lot, some characters appeared far too naive or narrow-minded while many developments felt forced and silly. The islanders' life style, the main hero's family relationships and the birdwatchers' microcosm seemed a nice touch at first, but as the narration went on, I started to feel bored and kind of manipulated by the author.

A scene towards the end of the book, which was supposed to be the most dramatic one of the story, was badly-written and a bit ridiculous, while the final chapter of the book was clumsy and over the top.

All in all, I would give this author an other try, I did find Blue Lightning an OK-ish read, but... I'm not enthused about it.
