The Gates of Ivory is a vibrant, mesmerizing novel that juxtaposes the cynical, sophisticated realm of London against the dreaded world of the Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot’s Cambodia. In London, psychiatrist Liz Headleand receives an unexpected package, containing, among other things, a laundry bill from a hotel in Bangkok, old newspaper clippings, and two human finger bones. She recognizes the handwriting as that of Stephen Cox, who has been travelling in the Far East. With the help of her friends, Liz goes in search of the man who might once have been her lover, and gradually we learn of Stephen’s difficult pilgrimage, from Thailand to Vietnam and, finally, Cambodia. Disturbing, wryly humorous, and deeply affecting, The Gates of Ivory brings two very different worlds into uneasy proximity, and the result is potent.

I tried to start this, but not enough patience to go on with this book, even if I do like Drabble's books.

Thank you for this wishlist book! Good to know, that the text needs patience to read so I don't try to start reading it with to much speed :)

Edit 1st of January 2021
It took some time for me to read this book through, anyway I finished it already in the last November, but has been lazy making my journal entries. The book was brilliant!
When Stephen was remembering his childhood (p. 104-105), it made me thing what same elements it's in me that were in me when I was a child and what I have now. And what have caused all the changes that have happened in my character. Interesting thoughts.
I participate with this book in Alejanda's Suomi mainittu" -challenge. Stephen, Konstantin and Akira are listening the seventh symphony of Sibelius (p. 235).
