Picked this up at the Kris Kringle brunch today. This has been on my TBR wishlist so looking forward to reading it over the summer break
Originally written in Farsi by Kurdish poet, Behrouz Boochani in situations of prolonged duress, torment, and suffering. It was written not on paper or a computer but thumbed on a phone and smuggled out of Manus Island in the form of thousands of text messages.
It starts with his stay in Kendari Island in Indonesia where he has fled to, to escape political persecution. He has run out of money and he nearly drowns twice on two attempts to reach Australia on boat. He then details his detention on Manus Island. Although called a detention centre it is very much run as a prison and the translator notes that should be given a place on the shelf of world prison literature, alongside such diverse works as Oscar Wilde's De Profundis, Antonio Gramsci's Prison Notebooks, Ray Parkin's Into the smother, Wole Soyinka's The Man Died and Martin Luther King Jr's Letter from Birmingham Jail.
It is not an easy read as all Behrouz's experiences are devastating.
