Beautifully written in an old fashioned voice, stylistically this could have been James M. Cain or Raymond Chandler. However, the fact that these were short stories should have warned me, seeing as I do not usually enjoy them unless they are of the fairytale variety. The stories here did not thrill me, which is a shame as the writing did!
