Paula Hawkins follow up to the enormously successful Girl on the Train. Beckford is a fictional village in the North of England. A river runs through the village and at the bend in the River there is a pool, the drowning pool, a popular spot for swimming in the summer; that in the past was used as a place to drown women suspected of witchcraft and it has also been a popular spot for female suicides. As the local psychic Nickie muses at one point 'No one like to think about the fact that the water in that river was infected with the blood and bile of persecuted women, unhappy women; they drank it every day.

I much preferred Girl on the Train. I initially found the many characters confusing but the story wasn’t bad. Just an easy read
