I've been wanting to read this for a while, found it for just a few dollars on Better World Books. Adding to Mt. TBR!

I've enjoyed other books by this author, and this one had been on my wish list for a long time (although I don't actually remember why), so I was glad to have finally read it.

The book was okay, but not great. Some of the descriptions of everyday life in 1947 as well as the true events of the fire that spread throughout Maine that year due to a severe drought were interesting. Unfortunately, most of the characters weren't at all interesting to me - they lacked depth or development, so I didn't really care about any of them. The one I thought was interesting was Aidan, and we didn't get to see him very much. I was so disgusted by Gene that I found myself quickly skimming his paragraphs. Yes, of course that doesn't erase the reality of men like him, nor of the lack of recourse women had in those days to escape a monster like that - but nonetheless, I didn't like reading about him.
