I came upon this book after reading Ashley Poston's "Heart of Iron", since I wanted to check out more of her stuff. While the idea of YA romance has never interested me that much, the idea of setting the romance around a fandom/convention setting immediately grabbed my attention. And you know what? The romance wasn't that bad. It's the story of two regular (well, somewhat regular in Darien's case) teenagers, who text back and forth about their favourite TV show and fall for each other with a vague Cinderella theme in the background. Completely believable and not at all angst ridden. And then, there's the fandom stuff. The idea that fandom can bring people together from all walks of life is the greatest thing about it and the book absolutely captures that. I'm also impressed that Poston managed to create a cult sci-fi show from scratch that feels real. My only gripe with the story, and it's a minor one, but who the hell films a big budget sci-fi movie in 23 days?! Anyway, I'm totally willing to check out the next book in the series.
------------------
Part romance, part love letter to nerd culture, and all totally adorbs, Geekerella is a fairy tale for anyone who believes in the magic of fandom. Geek girl Elle Wittimer lives and breathes Starfield, the classic sci-fi series she grew up watching with her late father. So when she sees a cosplay contest for a new Starfield movie, she has to enter. The prize? An invitation to the ExcelsiCon Cosplay Ball, and a meet-and-greet with the actor slated to play Federation Prince Carmindor in the reboot. With savings from her gig at the Magic Pumpkin food truck (and her dad’s old costume), Elle’s determined to win…unless her stepsisters get there first.

Teen actor Darien Freeman used to live for cons—before he was famous. Now they’re nothing but autographs and awkward meet-and-greets. Playing Carmindor is all he’s ever wanted, but the Starfield fandom has written him off as just another dumb heartthrob. As ExcelsiCon draws near, Darien feels more and more like a fake—until he meets a girl who shows him otherwise.
